Chennai, Tamil Nadu: Among 15 Indian fishermen were released by Sri Lankan Police Authority after the visit of Ranil Wickremesinghe to India. The Sri Lankan Navy arrested the 15 fishermen on the 8th of July 2023, as sources said. The 15 fishermen were arrested while fishing near Needuntheevu on the Sri Lankan coastline. Afterward, they were released by the Sri Lankan Prison Authorities on 20th July 2023, after the visit of Ranil Wickremesinghe to India.
As per sources, the fisherman was arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy. The Sri Lankan Navy claimed, “The fisherman had crossed the border illegally into their territorial waters.” Subsequently, the 15 fishermen from the Rameshwaram district, who were arrested by the Sri Lankan police authorities were welcomed by the party leaders of the Bhartiya Janata Party in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

As per the sources, the fisherman was taken to Sri Lankan Naval Base in Kankeshanthurain following the procedure, they were presented before a magistrate. The 15 fishermen were remanded to judicial custody until July 21. After the arrest of the 15 fishermen, a protest was initiated in Rameshwaram. The protest was led by the families of the arrested fishermen and the fishermen community of Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu.
